On June 12th, 2011, Discount Romance entered the Mystery Mammal Studios for the first time with four songs to lay down. Things got off to a slow start. Dan got lost and ended up in Glendale instead of on Glendale Blvd.
Dong arrived and didn’t look like he’d been in a motorcycle wreck and hospital at all. Ah to be young and a fast healer again.
Kent showed up late but was relatively un-hungover.
I supplied the snacks and soft drinks and anxiety.
The first song we tackled was Pop Song. Carissa had us a little worried because her voice sounded like she’d spent the previous evening with Charlie Sheen. As the day wore on though, her voice got better and better.
The song took a while to get down but it finally came together.
Next was Carrie’s Got a Lover. This only took a couple of takes to get right. A very good sign. We were getting in a groove! Well , the band was getting in a groove, I was just wearing one in the carpet from pacing back and forth.
About than time, Alisha and her friend arrived an took pictures for us to commemorate this momentous occasion. Thanks Alisha! All the pictures you have seen on these blogs so far have been from her camera.
Then we started goodbye. Dan’s forearms has seized up on him the morning of the recording and he had been valiantly playing with the band but now needed to sit out and do his part afterwards. Little did we know how far off that afterwards would be. This song was like pulling teeth. The groove was gone and so was a ton of studio time before Dan got to strap on his bass and go forth alone to face his musical destiny.
A fourth song? Fuck no! Time ran out and everyone looked like they’d eaten a pound of suspect shrimp by the time Goodbye was marginally completed.
We broke out a few Heinekens and called it a day.
I want to thank Matt from Mystery Mammal Studios for all his hard work and dedication to getting the right sound for each song.
Also, thanks to Jason for recommending we use the terrific little studio.
